The U.S. Army placement of troops deep…
January 1877 CE
The U.S. Army placement of troops deep within the heartland of Lakota Territory is another strategy.
In the fall of 1876, Colonel Nelson A. Miles and his Fifth Infantry establish the Cantonment on Tongue River (later renamed Fort Keogh) from which he operates throughout the winter of 1876–77 against any "hostiles" he can find.
In January 1877, he fights Crazy Horse and many other bands at the Battle of Wolf Mountain.
It is to be the last battle of the Great Sioux War.
