Archbishop Methodius obtains from Pope John VIII a formal sanction of his work, including the Slavic liturgy,in 880.

The papal bull Industriae Tuae creates an independent ecclesiastical province in Great Moravia with Archbishop Saint Methodius as its head.

The Old Church Slavonic is recognized as the fourth liturgical language, besides Latin, Greek and Hebrew.

A bishopric is established in Nitra.
