Texas is admitted to the Confederate States…
March 1861 CE
Texas is admitted to the Confederate States of America on March 2, 1861, and will ratify the permanent Confederate States Constitution on March 23.
Not all Texans favor secession initially, although many of the same will later support the Southern cause.
Texas's most notable Unionist is the state Governor, Sam Houston.
Not wanting to aggravate the situation, Houston had refused two offers from President Lincoln for Union troops to keep him in office.
After refusing to swear an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy, Houston will be deposed as governor on March 16.
