1826 CE
William Henry Ashley leads an expedition into the Salt Lake Valley in 1826.
Discovering Utah Lake south of the Great Salt Lake, he names it Lake Ashley, establishing Fort Ashley on the banks to trade with the Indians.
Ashley retires in 1826, having made a fortune in four years.
Selling the fur trading company to Jedediah Smith and some of his other men, he now devotes his energy to politics.
