Two hundred and sixty-two labor and trade union delegates, representing some ten thousand members, under the leadership of Bebel and Liebnecht, found the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (Social-Democratic Labor Party of Germany, or SDAP), Germany's first nationwide socialist party, at a congress held in Eisenach from August 7-9, 1869.
