On the site of Elat had been…
March 1949 CE
On the site of Elat had been nothing but an abandoned frontier outpost called Umm Rashrash at the end of the British Palestine mandate.
In early 1949 the Israeli army advances over one hundred and fifty miles (two hundred and forty kilometers) from rear bases at Be'er Sheva' (Beersheba) across the roadless Negev to reach Israel's Red Sea coast at the site of Elat on March 10, 1949.
This is the last operation of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49.
