The United States Army establishes Fort Buchanan, in order to help control new land acquired in the Gadsden Purchase, on the Sonoita River three miles southwest of present-day Sonoita in Santa Cruz County, Arizona on the east slope of what is now called Hog Canyon. At this time—November 17, 1856 —the area is under constant threat from hostile Apaches.
