The freed slaves are, however, still required to continue their plantation work on a contract basis and are not released until 1873; up to this date they conduct obligatory but minimally paid work at the plantations, which is considered as partial compensation for their masters.
In the meantime, many more workers have been imported from the Dutch East Indies, mostly Chinese inhabitants of that colony, creating a Chinese Surinamese population.
After 1873, most freedmen largely abandon the plantations where they had worked for several generations in favor of the capital city, Paramaribo.
