Cecilia Beaux, having returned to her Philadelphia studio in 1890, has earned a reputation as one of the city's best portrait painters and begins to enjoy considerable success.

The Dreamer (1894; Butler institute of American Art, Ohio) is an excellent example of the compelling portraits painted by Beaux during this era.

In 1894 she is elected an associate of the National Academy of Design.
