John Franklin has lost eleven of the twenty men in his party between 1819 and 1822.
Most had died of starvation, but there was also at least one murder and suggestions of cannibalism.
The survivors, forced to eat lichen, had even attempted to eat their own leather boots.
This gains Franklin the nickname of "the man who ate his boots".
