Burgoyne had considered renewing the attack the next day, but had called it off when Fraser noted that many men were fatigued from the previous day's exertions.

He has therefore dug his army in, and waits for news that he will receive some assistance from the south, as a letter he receives from General Clinton in New York on September 21 suggests that a movement up the Hudson will draw off some of Gates' army.

Although he is aware of the persistent desertions that are reducing the size of his army and that the army is running short of food and other critical supplies, he does not know that the American army is also daily growing in size, or that Gates has intelligence on how dire the situation is in his camp.
