For its part, Egypt considers the war a European conflict and hopes to avoid being entangled in it.
As one Axis victory succeeds another, Egyptians grow increasingly convinced that Germany will win the war.
Some are pleased at the prospect of a German victory, not because they are attracted to the Nazi ideology, but because they view any enemy of their enemy, Britain, as a friend.
Meanwhile, the British are determined to prevent an Egyptian-German alliance.
