Louis Botha directs the Boer commandos’ sporadic guerilla attacks against the British.

The British commander-in-chief, Field Marshal Lord Roberts, retaliates by employing, for the first time in modern history, concentration camps, ostensibly to protect Boer citizens and their families and to aid those whose farms the British had torched as punishment for supporting the Boer commandos.
