Cecil Rhodes’ British South Africa Company receives a royal charter on October 29, 1889, to control large areas of southeastern Africa north of the Transvaal.

Rhodes intends this commercial political entity to reduce Afrikaner political influence in the region and comprise an integral part of a projected British empire from the “Cape to Cairo”.
