Britain’s Anti-Corn Law League, in effect the resumption of the Anti-Corn Law Association, which had been created in London in 1836 but has not obtained widespread popularity, is founded in Manchester by Richard Cobden on September 18, 1838, as an organized attempt to thwart industrialists’ attempts at introducing free trade.
