Sofia University officially opens on October 1, 1888, becoming the first university in liberated Bulgaria.

Founded to serve as Bulgaria's primary institution of higher education, it initially it has four regular and three additional lecturers and forty-nine students.

It is founded as a higher pedagogical course, becomes a higher school after a few months, and will become a university in 1904.

The first rector is Bulgarian linguist Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan.
