Cecilia Beaux has proved herself the rival of John Singer Sargent in the art of fashionable portraiture by 1898, when the American painter, now forty-four, completes Dorothea and Francesca (1898; A.A. Munger Collection, The Art Institute of Chicago), a compositionally complex double portrait.
Although Beaux's style shows the influence of the French Impressionists, her work is not imitative of any master.
