The German revolutions of 1848–49 end in failure, as King Frederick William IV, Prussia's “divine right” monarch, had refused to accept the offer to be named “Emperor of the Germans” on April 2.

By April 21, the Prussian and most Germanic states have withdrawn their representatives from the Frankfurt National Assembly.
