Quantrill's guerrillas, now numbering approximately four hundred and fifty (including Frank James, elder brother of the later infamous bank robber Jesse James) mount a surprise attack on Lawrence, the home of Redlegs leader Jim Lane and the most important city in Kansas, on August 21st.

Quantrill's men burn or shoot to death one hundred and eighty-three men, women and children, and loot and burn most of the city.

The guerillas, of whom only one of is killed, escape into the Missouri hills.

The Lawrence massacre will become notorious in the North as one of the most vicious atrocities of the war.
