Calcutta has been hit by several cyclones,…
October 1864 CE
The latter, which strikes on October 5, 1864, kills an estimated seven hundred and sixty thousand people.
Despite being almost totally destroyed, Calcutta will grow, mostly in an unplanned manner, in the next one hundred and fifty years from 117,000 to 1,098,000 inhabitants (including suburbs), and today has a metropolitan population of approximately 13.2 million.
As the capital of undivided British India from 1772, Calcutta is regarded as the second city of the British Empire (after London) and is aptly called "City of Palaces"; the Great Eastern Hotel is regarded as the "Jewel of the East".
