Doctor José Rizal is arrested and deported…
July 1892 CE
Doctor José Rizal is arrested and deported by the Spanish on July 6, a few after he had established La Liga Filipina (The Filipino League), a Filipino association organized to seek reforms in the colonial government, after his return from the Americas.
At this time, Rizal had already been declared an enemy of the state by the Spanish authorities because of the publication of his novel.
His novels Noli Me Tángere (Touch Me Not, 1887) and El Filibusterismo (The Filibuster, 1891), expose Spanish abuses in socio-political and religious aspects.
The publication of his first novel had brought the infamous agrarian conflict in his hometown of Calamba, Laguna, in 1888, when Dominican haciendas were favored by the government over native landowners.
