November 1876 CE
Paul Cézanne, introduced by Renoir to the collector Victor Chocquet, had elected not to exhibit with the Impressionists and had instead submitted to the Salon but was rejected.
He works in L'Estaque in the spring and returns in the autumn to Paris, Quai d'Anjou.
He now breaks professionally with Impressionism, although he continues to maintain friendly relations with “the humble and colossal [Camille] Pissarro,” with Monet, “the mightiest of us all,” and with Renoir, whom he also admires.
