Charles V, as the lord of the Burgundian Netherlands, stipulates that Willem's parents shall renounce his guardianship and that the young prince, who had been raised in a cultivated Lutheran environment, shall be educated in his new fatherland as a Catholic.

Willem therefore moves from the ancestral castle of Dillenburg, Germany, where he was born, to Breda in the Netherlands, where he converts to Catholicism.
