April 1661 CE
Charles's coronation takes place on April 23, 1661, at Westminster Abbey.
He is the last sovereign to make the traditional procession from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey the day before the coronation.
The second English Parliament of the reign assembles shortly after the coronation.
Dubbed the Cavalier Parliament, it is overwhelmingly Royalist and Anglican.
It seeks to discourage nonconformity to the Church of England, and passes several acts to secure Anglican dominance.
The first of these, the Corporation Act 1661, requires municipal officeholders to swear allegiance.
