The American Party (Know-Nothings) convenes in Philadelphia to nominate their first Presidential candidate, former President Millard Fillmore, on February 18, 1856.

The party had declined rapidly in the North after 1855.

In the presidential election of 1856, it is bitterly divided over slavery.
