Years: 1876 - 1887

Niue's King Fataaiki, fearing the consequences of annexation by a less benevolent colonial power, writes to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom in 1887, requesting that Niue be placed under British protection, but his request is turned down.

The offer will not be accepted until 1900.

Christian missionaries from the London Missionary Society had converted most of the population of Niue circa 1846.
