Henri Rousseau's painting The Toll-House (c. 1890; Courtauld Institute Galleries, London) shows his place of work; an early photograph of the same location shows that Rousseau has conferred on his depiction a profound lyricism while remaining loyal to reality.
Now fifty-six and recently remarried, Rousseau lives in a humble quarter of Paris, where he gives painting lessons in his home.
