Bahia Blanca, located on one of Argentina's finest natural harbors, is established as a fortress on April 11, 1828, by Colonel Ramón Estomba, acting under the orders of Argentinian Brigadier General Juan Manuel de Rosas,.
Named Fortaleza Protectora Argentina (Argentine Protective Fortress), it is intended to protect dwellers and their cattle from native rustling, and to protect the coast from the Brazilian navy, which had landed in the area the previous year.
It will be visited by Charles Darwin during his travels through South America in September 1833.
