Columbus had been denied port on arriving…
July 1502 CE
Columbus had been denied port on arriving at Santo Domingo on June 29, and the new governor has refused to listen to his storm prediction.
Instead, while Columbus' ships shelter at the mouth of the Rio Jaina, the first Spanish treasure fleet sails into the hurricane.
Columbus' ships survive with only minor damage, while twenty-nine of the thirty ships in the governor's fleet are lost to a storm on July 1.
In addition to the ships, five hundred lives (including that of the governor, Francisco de Bobadilla) and an immense cargo of gold are surrendered to the sea.
