Tokugawa Iesada succeeds his father Ieyoshi, as Japanese shōgun on July 27, 1853, beginning the Late Tokugawa shogunate (the last part of the Edo period in Japan).

Already in poor health, he takes no active role in political affairs, leaving negotiations with the Americans in the hand of Abe Masahiro.
