1888 CE to 1899 CE

Two new cash crops, coffee and cocoa, had been introduced to São Tomé and Príncipe.

The rich, volcanic soils proved well suited to the new cash crop industry, and Portuguese companies or absentee landlord soon had extensive plantations (known as roças).

By 1908, São Tomé will have become the world's largest producer of cocoa, which will remain the country's most important crop.
