Construction of a bridge over the Thames, linking Putney on the south side with Fulham to the north, had first been sanctioned in 1726 by an Act of Parliament.
Built by local master carpenter Thomas Phillips to a design by architect Sir Jacob Acworth, the Putney bridge is opened in November 1729, to become the only bridge between London Bridge and Kingston Bridge at this time.
A toll bridge, it features tollbooths at either end of the timber-built structure.

The ban punishes sellers and opium den keepers, but not users of the drug.
