Walker had organized a battalion of four companies, of which one is composed of Germans, a second of Frenchmen, and the other two of Americans, totaling two hundred and forty men placed under the command of Colonel Schlessinger to invade Costa Rica in a preemptive action.

This advance force is defeated at the Battle of Santa Rosa on March 20, 1856.
