Cyprus submits in 709 BCE to Sargon II, one of Assyria's great kings during the last century of its history.

Sargon, who extends and consolidates the conquests of his predecessor, Tiglath-Pileser III, erects a stela at Citium recording the fact that seven Cypriot kings—including rulers of Curium, Paphos, Marion, Soli, Lapithos, Salamis, and Amathus—have paid him homage; subsequent Assyrian documents mention eleven tributary kingdoms, the seven already cited plus Citium, Kyrenia, Tamassos, and Idalium.

This subordination to Assyria, which is probably nominal, will last until about 663.
