High concentrations of nickel–copper at Murray Mine on the edge of the Sudbury Basin located near Sudbury, Ontario, are revealed by blasting and excavation during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883.

This leads led to the launch of mining operations in the Sudbury area, which continue today.
