Johan Jongkind, a Dutch painter and printmaker…
August 1878 CE
Johan Jongkind, a Dutch painter and printmaker who has helped to stimulate the development of Impressionism through his friendship with Claude Monet, suffers from a persecution complex.
He has dissipated most of his earnings on drink and spends a good deal of time avoiding creditors.
He settles with his companion Joséphine Fesser at La Côte-Saint-André (Isére), where he continues to paint the scenes of seacoasts and ports for which he is famous.
