Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, later Mount Holyoke…
1837 CE
Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, later Mount Holyoke College, is founded by Mary Lyon on November 8, 1837 in South Hadley, Massachusetts as the sister school to Andover Seminary.
The "first of the Seven Sisters", it is the oldest continuing institution of higher education for women in the world.
Lyon, who had been involved in the development of both Hartford Female Seminary and Ipswich Female Seminary, was also involved in the creation of Wheaton Female Seminary (now Wheaton College, Massachusetts) in 1834.
Other early proponents of education for women include Sarah Pierce (Litchfield Female Academy, 1792); Catharine Beecher (Hartford Female Seminary, 1823); and Zilpah P. Grant Banister (Ipswich Female Seminary, 1828).
