Bonnard and Vuillard, the two most distinguished members of the Nabis, use the Impressionist broken-color technique of capturing the light and atmosphere of the fleeting moment to convey the warmth, comfort, and quiet isolation of interior scenes, but unlike the Impressionists, who derived their colors from precise observation of the visual world, these painters exaggerate and distort natural color to express mood.

Both Bonnard and Vuillard display a strong decorative sense in the arrangement of dense areas of color.

Vuillard uses rich, subdued colors to produce paintings characterized by harmonious composition and exquisite form.

Bonnard, somewhat less concerned with formal structure, infuses a playful tenderness into his bright, gently colored scenes (which usually include the unobtrusive figure of his wife).
