Colonel Maximo Santos (1882-86) is appointed Uruguay's president in 1882 by a General Assembly elected under his pressure, and his political entourage names him leader of the Colorado Party.
In 1886 Santos, who had been promoted to general, suppresses an insurrection led by the opposition.
After an attempt against his life, however, he too resigns and goes to live in Europe.
