The cautious McClellan, after failing to follow up on Antietam, is replaced by Major General Ambrose Burnside.

Burnside is soon defeated at the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, when more than twelve thousand Union soldiers are killed or wounded during repeated futile frontal assaults against Marye's Heights.

After the battle, Burnside is replaced by Major General Joseph Hooker.
