October 1189 CE
Emperor Frederick had embarked in 1189 on the Third Crusade, a massive expedition in conjunction with the French, led by King Philip, and the English, under King Richard.
He has organized a grand army of one hundred thousand men (including twenty thousand knights) and set out on the overland route to the Holy Land.
However, some historians believe that this is an exaggeration and that the true figure might be closer to fifteen thousand men, including three thousand knights.
When they were in Hungary, Barbarossa had personally asked the Hungarian Prince Géza, brother of the king, Béla III of Hungary, to join the Crusade.
The king had agreed, and a Hungarian army of two thousand men led by Géza has escorted the German emperor's forces.
Having passed through Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria, causing disturbances in the Balkans, arrive in imperial territory in the autumn of 1189.
There are subsequent misunderstandings with Emperor Isaac.
