September 1868 CE
Emperor Meiji announces on September 3 that the name of the city of Edo is to be changed to Tokyo (meaning Eastern Capital), as he intends to establish his residence here in the following year.
By this time, the population of Japan has reached about thirty million.
The city is divided into Yamanote and Shitamachi.
Tokyo is already the nation's political and cultural center, and the emperor's residence will make it a de facto imperial capital as well, with the former Edo Castle becoming the Imperial Palace.
