Henry Kingsley inaugurates Australian prose with his 1859 publication of The Recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn, a well-regarded novel based on his five years in Australia.
Kingsley had emigrated from England to Australia, arriving at Melbourne in the Gauntlet in December 1853.
He had become involved in gold-digging, and later joined the mounted police, before returning to the U.K. in 1858.
