October 1855 CE
Augustus Gregory explores the northern reaches of the Northern Territory to the Gulf of Carpenteria, sighting Point Pearce on September 1.
On the next day their vessel grounds on a reef and it is impossible to float off until September 10.
At the end of the month the party splits up, with one group going up the river in a schooner, while Gregory leads the other over the range.
They are not reunited until October 20; they now proceed southwestward across Queensland.
