The Conflict Between León and Portugal: The Battle for Salamanca (1163–1164)
In 1163, as tensions between Portugal and León escalated, Afonso I of Portugal occupied Salamanca, retaliating against King Ferdinand II of León’s efforts to repopulate the region. This act of defiance was part of Afonso’s broader ambition to extend Portuguese influence beyond its established borders.
Ferdinand II's Victory Over Afonso I (1164)
In 1164, Ferdinand II launched a counteroffensive, decisively defeating Afonso I and reclaiming Salamanca for León. The victory reaffirmed León’s dominance over the disputed frontier territories, temporarily halting Portuguese expansion eastward.
Although Afonso suffered a setback, his ambitions remained undeterred, and the ongoing rivalry between Portugal and León would continue to shape the political landscape of the Iberian Peninsula in the following decades.
