Fewer than forty-five of the original one…
January 1687 CE
Fewer than forty-five of the original one hundred and eighty people remain by early January 1687 in the colony, which is beset by internal strife.
La Salle believes that their only hope of survival lies in trekking overland to request assistance from New France, and some time this month he leads a final expedition to attempt to reach the Illinois Territory.
Fewer than twenty people remain at Fort Saint Louis, primarily women, children, and those deemed unfit, as well as seven soldiers and three missionaries with whom La Salle is unhappy.
Seventeen men are included on the expedition, including La Salle, his brother, and two of his nephews.
