The appeal of “manifest destiny”—a term coined by O’Sullivan to describe what many Americans regard as a God-given right to expand their national territory throughout the continent—is potent enough that the anti-slavery party is unable, or unwilling, to block the March 3, 1845 admission of Florida and the December 29, 1845 admission of Texas, both slave-states.

Texas is admitted as the twenty-eighth U.S. state.

In accepting the Texas state constitution, congress leaves in a clause granting Texans the right to vote, at any time, to divide their large state into as many as five separate states.

One obvious advantage to such a division would be the gain for the Texas region of as many as eight additional senators.
