The settlement of Potosí, perhaps the world’s highest city, is established in 1546 forty-two hundred-meter base of the Cerro Rico ("rich hill"),a mountain of the Cordillera Oriental of south central Bolivia following the Spanish discovery of rich silver deposits in what will prove to be one of the world's richest ore mountains.
It will soon produce fabulous wealth, making Potosí one of the largest cities in the Americas and the world with a population exceeding two hundred thousand people.
