Southern abolitionists, led by Benjamin Lundy, have favored gradual emancipation and spoken mildly against the institution of slavery for the past forty years.
Around 1830, however, a radical, disruptive abolitionism emerges as groups of New Englanders begin characterizing slavery as an unconscionable sin and demand “immediate, complete, and uncompensated emancipation throughout the states”, calling upon each citizen to cast aside prejudice against African-Americans and to join the anti-slavery crusade.
