Le Sueur had left Fort L'Huillier in…

Le Sueur had left Fort L'Huillier in May 1701 to accompany a a large quantity of the blue earth back to Fort Mobile for further analysis, leaving a garrison of men at the fort under the command of d'Eraque.

While he is gone, however, the fort is apparently attacked later in the year by Sauk and Fox tribesmen.

Three of the garrison are killed in the attack on the fort, which is afterwards abandoned.

In addition, the blue clay will be found to be worthless, not the copper ore Le Sueur had hoped.
